Therapeutic effects and pharmacology:

Melatonin dietary supplements can be derived from animals or microorganisms, but most are synthetically produced.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain in response to darkness. This hormone regulates the body’s circadian rhythm, endocrine secretions, and sleep patterns. Exposure to light at night can halt melatonin production.

 Side effects:

Melatonin is safe for most adults when used short-term and even long-term. However, it may cause side effects such as headache, drowsiness, dizziness, and nausea.

Avoid driving or using machinery for 4 to 5 hours after taking melatonin.

Drug interactions:

Melatonin interacts with anticoagulants and warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. Caffeine affects melatonin levels in the body, and oral contraceptives can raise melatonin levels. Concurrent use with antiepileptic drugs (increasing the frequency and severity of seizures), antidiabetic medications (increasing the risk of hypoglycemia), antihypertensive drugs (disrupting blood pressure regulation), fluvoxamine (raising melatonin levels), benzodiazepines (sedatives and sleep aids—reducing brain function), and immunosuppressive drugs (enhancing immunity) is not permitted.

Precautions and warnings:

In people under 20 years of age, it should be used under the supervision of a doctor.

Avoid driving or operating sensitive machinery for up to 5 hours after consumption.

If taken concurrently with other medications or in case of diabetes, liver problems, high blood pressure, epilepsy, or depression, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use.

Contraindications:

Do not take concurrently with immunosuppressive drugs.
